THE DEVELOPMENT OF EVALUATIVE RESPONSES TO MUSIC: Infants Prefer To Listen To Consonance Over Dissonance

In Experiment 1, &month-old infants looked longer in order to listen to a set of consonant intervals than to a set of dissonant intervals. In Experiment 2, infants preferred to listen to the original version of a Mozart minuet than to a version altered to contain many dissonant intervals. Acoustic Determinants of Infant Preference for Motherese Speech

Three experiments investigated possible acoustic determinants of the infant listening preference for motherese speech found by Fernald (1985). To test the hypothesis that the intonation of motherese speech was sufficient to elicit this preference, it was necessary to eliminate lexical content and to isolate the three maior acoustic correlates of intonation: (1) fundamental frequency (Fo), or pi...

Three-Month-Olds Prefer Speech to Other Naturally Occurring Signals

Human infants show a preference for listening to speech, but little is known about how infants listen to other naturally occurring sounds. Here, we test infants’ listening bias for speech against a range of naturally occurring sounds that share properties of speech to varying extents and we aim to better characterize the speech properties that attract infant attention. We compared 3-month-olds’...

Direct gaze modulates face recognition in young infants.

From birth, infants prefer to look at faces that engage them in direct eye contact. In adults, direct gaze is known to modulate the processing of faces, including the recognition of individuals. In the present study, we investigate whether direction of gaze has any effect on face recognition in four-month-old infants. Four-month infants were shown faces with both direct and averted gaze, and su...

Preference and processing: The role of speech affect in early spoken word recognition

To assess influences of speech affect on early lexical processing, 7.5and 10.5-month-old infants were familiarized with one word spoken with happy affect and another with neutral affect and then tested on recognition of these words in fluent passages. Infants heard all passages either with happy affect or with neutral affect. Contrary to initial expecta...
